Faculty Fellows Program

In support of the SSU Civic Action Plan/CCE Strategic Plan, Faculty Fellows for each School serve three-year terms. The Faculty Fellow position has two major and complementary components:  1) faculty development; 2) institutionalization of learning pedagogies for the common good.

Faculty Development
  1. Support faculty in your School with development and deepening of service-learning courses, community-based internships, community engaged scholarship, and community service.

  2. Identify faculty in your School to respond to community requests.

  3. Organize a dialogue series for faculty about community based learning and scholarship. Topics could include: community-based research, oral history projects, civic engagement activities in the curriculum, working with community partners as co-educators, students' perspectives on community-based education, social justice and civic action, and local action collaborations.

  4. Present one workshop/per semester in collaboration with the Faculty Center on how faculty can use their public scholarship for their RTP process, how departments can use public scholarship in the accreditation process, or a related topic.

  5. Develop a strategy to collect RFP (request for proposal) and distribute funds for curriculum development.

  6. Serve as a liaison from the CCE to your School by recruiting faculty and students from your School to attend CCE events; collecting and sharing stories and data from your School; maintaining and develop content about your School’s community engaged work on the CCE website; attending School and Department meetings and advocating for community engagement; representing your School on CCE Strategic Action Committee.

  7. Identify faculty need and work with CCE staff to connect with community partners. Assist in the development of new community partners and sustaining of existing community partnerships.

Institutionalization of Learning Pedagogies for the Common Good – one project/year. Examples include:
  1. Review the RTP policy and work to strengthen the value of learning pedagogies for the common good.  

  • Explore and document ways to use public scholarship for faculty benefit in the RTP process. Perhaps implement faculty training.

  • Explore and document ways to increase value of public scholarship in the RTP process. Perhaps work toward implementation of recommendations.

  1. Review accreditation policies and work to strengthen the value of learning pedagogies for the common good.

  • Explore and document ways to use public scholarship for department and University benefit in the accreditation process. Perhaps implement faculty training.

  • Explore and document ways to increase value of public scholarship in the accreditation process. Perhaps work toward implementation of recommendations.

  1. Review Program Review process to strengthen the value of learning pedagogies for the common good.

  • Explore and document ways to use public scholarship for department and University benefit in the Program Review process. Perhaps implement faculty training.

  • Explore and document ways to increase value of public scholarship in the Program Review process. Perhaps work toward implementation of recommendations.

  1. Review GE policy and work to strengthen the value of learning pedagogies for the common good.

  • Explore and document ways to use public scholarship for department and University benefit in the GE curriculum. Perhaps implement faculty training.

  • Explore and document ways to increase value of public scholarship in the GE curriculum. Perhaps work toward implementation of recommendations.

  1. Evaluate the implementation of the CIP program throughout your School and recommend ways to improve learning and community outcomes.

  2. Evaluate community-based internships throughout your School and recommend ways to improve learning and community outcomes.

Additional Responsibilities:

  1. Serve on the CCE’s Strategic Action Committee and chair a Task force

  2. Collaborate with CCE staff and other Faculty Fellows.

  3. Participate in CCE organizational planning and reporting.

  4. Establish weekly office hours in the CCE.
