I had the pleasure of attending the Rhythms of the Pacific event on campus in the Seawolf Plaza in honor of AAPI Heritage Month with amazingly beautiful performances and delicious food provided by Tambayan.

This was a great and easy opportunity to see the types of performances that celebrate Filipino and Pacific Islander culture along with the pleasure of indulging in some lumpia. Recognizing different cultures helps us appreciate and learn about other people whether it be through clothing, art, or food. Our campus allowing students to express their cultures is truly wonderful because it lets us know there is an environment created for us to come together and be seen.

Rhythms of the Pacific coordinator and student Raiven Reyna believes that events like these are great opportunities to “showcase our traditional cultures such as Filipino dances and Pacific Islander dances like hula and tahitian. I think that having these opportunities led by the school shows that there is a space for us.” As Reyna explained, it creates a safe space for people of different cultures to share the beauty of their culture while also educating students.

As a Latina on campus, I understand how amazing it is to have a safe space where you can share your culture and be represented. Having your culture seen in areas where you normally wouldn't, is a proud feeling.

I look forward to seeing more cultural events like these on campus in the future. Having these events on campus provides the easiest opportunity for students like us to continue to support one another in embracing cultures.
